Thunderbird is a psychedelic/contemporary jazz quartet that coalesced out of Guelph ON's vibrant music community in late 2012.
The band was formed by high flyin' Bassist Dylan White, who's known for his work with afro-jazz experimantalists Manatee, among others. The group features Guitarist Nick Russell, a young session firebrand and music educator, teaching out of the world famous Folkway Music, Pianist/Wizard Andrew Liorti (also of Manatee) and Drummer Will Vandermay, a veteran of the Toronto experimental and indie scenes with many groups including Peers, Boys Who Say No, and Shawn Hewitt & the National Strike. Cutting their teeth on everything from jazz standards at supper clubs, to funking up packed dance floors rammed with Guelph U students; Thunderbird quickly became a mainstay of various scenes within Guelph's super-charged music continuum.
The group blends a love of contemporary jazz and deep groove music with a decidedly 70's funk and fusion flavour on their first EP, 'The Deschamps Sessions'. The set is comprised of original music composed by Liorti, White and Russell and was recorded the old school way; live off the floor in single takes in early 2014. The group are promising an even wilder ride with their next salvo, due out in the summer of 2016.
